Sunday Songs…

Have you ever noticed how much easier it is to memorize a thing, if you put it to music? Ever since I was little, if I wanted to remember a special thing, I would sing it to myself, making up a tune to go along with it. I know it probably sounds silly, but I think they say that you learn better when you read, write, and speak the thing you are seeking to put to memory.

Anyway, the same still holds true for me when it comes to memorizing scripture, which is incredibly useful for keeping a healthy relationship with my Father. That’s the best place to go for encouragement, insight, wisdom, discernment, and a myriad of other knowledgeable things.

I can sing a hymn as good as the next person, but I can honestly say that from where I’m sitting at this moment, I couldn’t tell you the names of any of those songs, nor their verses. Out of sight, out of mind, I suppose.

I thought I would share several really beautiful versions of several of the Psalms, and if you want a quick way of memorizing them, just listen to the music and learn them in that form… scripture is scripture, and I for one wish to learn it the best way I can…

Psalm 23, by Leanne Crawford:

Psalm 23

A psalm of David.

The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
    He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,
    he refreshes my soul.
He guides me along the right paths
    for his name’s sake.
Even though I walk
    through the darkest valley,[a]
I will fear no evil,
    for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
    they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me
    in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
    my cup overflows.
Surely your goodness and love will follow me
    all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord
    forever.

Psalm 24, by Keith and Kristyn Getty:

Psalm 24

1 The earth is the LORD’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it;2 for he founded it upon the seas and established it upon the waters. 3 Who may ascend the hill of the LORD? Who may stand in his holy place?4 He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to an idol or swear by what is false. [1] 5 He will receive blessing from the LORD and vindication from God his Savior.6 Such is the generation of those who seek him, who seek your face, O God of Jacob. [2] Selah 7 Lift up your heads, O you gates; be lifted up, you ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in.8 Who is this King of glory? The LORD strong and mighty, the LORD mighty in battle.9 Lift up your heads, O you gates; lift them up, you ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in.10 Who is he, this King of glory? The LORD Almighty– he is the King of glory. Selah

Psalm 46, by Shane and Shane:

Psalm 46

God is our refuge and strength,
    an ever-present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way
    and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea,
though its waters roar and foam
    and the mountains quake with their surging.[c]

There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
    the holy place where the Most High dwells.
God is within her, she will not fall;
    God will help her at break of day.
Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall;
    he lifts his voice, the earth melts.

The Lord Almighty is with us;
    the God of Jacob is our fortress.

Come and see what the Lord has done,
    the desolations he has brought on the earth.
He makes wars cease
    to the ends of the earth.
He breaks the bow and shatters the spear;
    he burns the shields[d] with fire.
10 He says, “Be still, and know that I am God;
    I will be exalted among the nations,
    I will be exalted in the earth.”

11 The Lord Almighty is with us;
    the God of Jacob is our fortress.

Psalm 91, by Renew Collective:

Psalm 91

Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High
    will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.[a]
I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress,
    my God, in whom I trust.”

Surely he will save you
    from the fowler’s snare
    and from the deadly pestilence.
He will cover you with his feathers,
    and under his wings you will find refuge;
    his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.
You will not fear the terror of night,
    nor the arrow that flies by day,
nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness,
    nor the plague that destroys at midday.
A thousand may fall at your side,
    ten thousand at your right hand,
    but it will not come near you.
You will only observe with your eyes
    and see the punishment of the wicked.

If you say, “The Lord is my refuge,”
    and you make the Most High your dwelling,
10 no harm will overtake you,
    no disaster will come near your tent.
11 For he will command his angels concerning you
    to guard you in all your ways;
12 they will lift you up in their hands,
    so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.
13 You will tread on the lion and the cobra;
    you will trample the great lion and the serpent.

14 “Because he[b] loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him;
    I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.
15 He will call on me, and I will answer him;
    I will be with him in trouble,
    I will deliver him and honor him.
16 With long life I will satisfy him
    and show him my salvation.”

Psalm 139, by Ellie Holcomb:

Psalm 139

You have searched me, Lord,
    and you know me.
You know when I sit and when I rise;
    you perceive my thoughts from afar.
You discern my going out and my lying down;
    you are familiar with all my ways.
Before a word is on my tongue
    you, Lord, know it completely.
You hem me in behind and before,
    and you lay your hand upon me.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
    too lofty for me to attain.

Where can I go from your Spirit?
    Where can I flee from your presence?
If I go up to the heavens, you are there;
    if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.
If I rise on the wings of the dawn,
    if I settle on the far side of the sea,
10 even there your hand will guide me,
    your right hand will hold me fast.
11 If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me
    and the light become night around me,”
12 even the darkness will not be dark to you;
    the night will shine like the day,
    for darkness is as light to you.

13 For you created my inmost being;
    you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
    your works are wonderful,
    I know that full well.
15 My frame was not hidden from you
    when I was made in the secret place,
    when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.
16 Your eyes saw my unformed body;
    all the days ordained for me were written in your book
    before one of them came to be.
17 How precious to me are your thoughts,[a] God!
    How vast is the sum of them!
18 Were I to count them,
    they would outnumber the grains of sand—
    when I awake, I am still with you.

19 If only you, God, would slay the wicked!
    Away from me, you who are bloodthirsty!
20 They speak of you with evil intent;
    your adversaries misuse your name.
21 Do I not hate those who hate you, Lord,
    and abhor those who are in rebellion against you?
22 I have nothing but hatred for them;
    I count them my enemies.
23 Search me, God, and know my heart;
    test me and know my anxious thoughts.
24 See if there is any offensive way in me,
    and lead me in the way everlasting.

This should getcha started… try it out, if you’re of a mind to work on your memory verses.

God Bless you all, today, tomorrow, and every day that follows… Hugs!

  1. Thanks so much for this post. It is an answer to a prayer. Then it is not silly to sing scripture. It is biblical. The Psalms were songs or still are. There are a website: project of love on YouTube. The whole Bible has been set in song. The Hewbrews , God’s own people also sing scripture. You are spot on. You can also check out Julie Meyer. She also sings Psalms. God bless you my friend.

  2. Putting things to music helps so much! I used to make up songs to help my 3rd graders memorize their multiplication facts. They loved it! Also, I learned the names of the books of the Bible thru a song from VBS when I was a little girl.

  3. Thank you for sharing this. I’ve always struggled with MCI, especially when it comes to memorizing scripture. However, like you, I have no trouble remembering song lyrics. Back in 2018, my Small Group suggested that I try singing the scripture I want to memorize, either in my head or out loud. I still use this method today, and it helps, even though it doesn’t cure my MCI. It does make it easier for me to recall scripture in prayer.
