Remembering Mr. Microphone…

Daily writing prompt
Have you ever performed on stage or given a speech?

While I could fill these pages with stories of some of my antics in the past, I will instead regale you with memories we all can relate to… our moments with Mr. Microphone!!!

I think that most of us have performed or given a speech at one point or another. It started when we were small children and still full of imagination! Who didn’t play pirates at the public park… we didn’t care who was watching.

Did we, or did we not play act at any given moment? We had baby dolls to feed, change, and spank… yes, I used to put my babies in the corner for time outs. I will even wager that many of us dressed up our dogs and cats and locked them in a room with us while we sang a song, or gave an award winning performance of Laura from Little House on the Prairie.

When Mr. Microphone came on the scene in 1979 I was 11 years old. I never bought one myself, but it wasn’t necessary since nearly everyone I knew had them. Now you may understand why I figured we’ve all done a bit of song and dance at some point in the past… you just sort of forgot… or blocked it out, depending on how bad you sounded on Mr. Microphone.

While I can’t say how good I was, I can say with certainty that I was LOUD! I figured that with the feedback we got from those things, if I just yelled into the mike, no one would know the difference… and they didn’t! Oh I’m sure they heard how bad I sounded, but you see, none of us cared… because we were still kids.

Looking back over the years, I have been on stage a good many times, but it wasn’t nearly as fun and fulfilling as when I was young and didn’t care what people would think.

When my girls were small, we spent a great deal of time in different children’s programs at Church and School. Every change of season brought some form of program or other that required our little ones to cross a stage, whether it be a piano recital or Holiday Pageant. The girls did great in groups of kids, but not the solo stuff… I’m talking deer in the headlights!

Get them together with their closest friends, however, and it was a completely different story… let the drama commence! All we had to do was give them some form of recording device and either lock them in… or lock them OUT! Hours later there would be food and a premier performance of whatever they came up with… sometimes a video, sometimes a talent show, or sometimes a Live Performance!

If you are ever wondering about personality and character dynamics… just watch a group of kids trying to organize themselves into a functioning show of music or acting. You will see the directors come out, the stand-up comedians, the drama queens, and last but not least… the OCD kids that will have a melt down if things can’t be perfect! Remember, they are grown ups in training, so this is where they are figuring out how to act and respond to those around them.

When I was a kid we did this kind of stuff too, but there were no lightweight cameras or Video Recorders. All we had was the 80 lb. movie production size Camcorders needing the strength of Thor to carry them… and Mr. Microphone! No Problem… we got the job done… in the back of cars driving down the street, in bathrooms across America, and in school hallways before a teacher could confiscate them.

I better stop here, or we will end up down some memory lane that lands us in a part of my naughty days that, fortunately, were not caught on camera.

I do really miss the I Don’t Care What People Think days… yes, I miss you Mr. Microphone!!!

A Bit of This… A Bit of That…

Right now I am thoroughly enjoying my new eyeballs… so I’m doing a good bit of blinking, which is pretty nice. If you’re wondering, it’s because they took out the astigmatism in my right eye during the first surgery, so blinking doesn’t hurt anymore.

What are your favorite physical activities or exercises?

Today also marks the first day I shall be walking on my trails again… I am sooooooo excited!

However, I shall first be drinking a cup of coffee while I answer this prompt. Reading and writing are some of my other favorites. My new eyes have made these activities even more wonderful than I remembered. I have placed a hold on my first choice of good reads with my new peepers. I decided on Redwall by Brian Jacques. I started reading this book for my children years ago and ended up falling in love with the characters. I basically binge read everything written by the author. Whenever a new book came out in the series… I had it! I know it’s for younger readers but I don’t care… talent is talent and this author owned it with pretty much whatever he wrote. I aspire…

I also have plans to pick a camera back up, as well as a paintbrush and also my faithful crotchet hooks… why not, I say?!

Whatever my favorite activities are or will be, it is fitting that my eyes now work fully… to be a light in the darkness, one needs good vision!

They Call Me Cry Baby…

Daily writing prompt
What could you do less of?

Sure, for a baby it’s ok to cry when they’re hungry or poopy, but when I do it, everyone at WalMart walks the other way… what’s up with that?

Anybody associated with me knows a few things of certainty about this girl… I got a mouth on me, and I cry… alot! Not sorry though!

I am definitely a very affectionate and tender hearted Wolverine/Loud Mouth Frog! Here is the problem with this… it gets uncomfortable to be around someone who is always leaking from their eyes.

If I could do less of something it would be all the blubbering… not the crying, just all the outward leaking. I love who I am, love my emotion and my passion! I think that maybe I just need like a Cry Baby Bodyguard.

It would be awful nice to have another nearby at all times, with tissue in hand, and a resting ***** face that might sober my boo hooing at any given moment.

Besides, the question only asked what I COULD do less of… not what I WILL do less of… I think it would actually take away from who I am.

I don’t wish to be devoid of emotions God placed within this vessel upon my creation… I need to learn to use them for His purposes! This teary side of me is one of the most beautiful gifts I could have been given.

I can feel… I can heal… I can care… I can share… I can forgive… I can love… and I can Live!

I guess your just stuck with me as I am!

What’s your favorite cartoon?

Quite honestly, there isn’t a single cartoon of late that I would take the time to watch.

Were I to think of any cartoon worth mentioning, it would have to come from the past… that’s where all the good shows are! I have to admit that I would even prefer to return to the 60’s commercials… at least I wasn’t offended by most of them!

I even miss the comics on the back of cereal boxes or jokes inside the box of Cracker Jacks! Remember the little tattoos inside the Bazooka Bubble Gum?

Maybe it isn’t the cartoon at all that I fondly remember as my fav, but rather, sitting in my pajamas on a Saturday morning with a bowl of cereal… half watching the cartoon and half reading the puzzle on the back of my cereal box.

I loved Bugs Bunny, obviously, but my favorites might have been Johnny Quest, The Wonder Twins and Scooby Doo. I did really enjoy watching Granny try to wrangle Sylvester, Tweetie, and Hector the Bulldog. Let’s face it… there are too many awesome cartoon characters for me to remember.

Too bad the prompt question didn’t ask what my favorite cartoon time was… I could have saved us all a lot of time and just said CHILDHOOD!

Me and My Shadow…

Daily writing prompt
Do you have a favorite place you have visited? Where is it?

My most fond memory of a place visited would have to be Kamloops, British Columbia.

Photo by James Wheeler on Pexels.com

When my oldest daughter was about eleven, I wanted to do something special with her… just the two of us. I packed her up and drove straight through from Seattle to Kamloops for a massive Native American Gathering… a Powwow! I had wanted to attend one for much of my life and finally had an opportunity for a Mom Daughter Road Trip, so I took it!

I woke my girl up during the night, packed her snoring little body into the passenger side of our Toyota Camry and headed for Canada. We drove straight through Banff National Forest, which was amazing, by the way. Once we got to Kamloops and dumped all our stuff in the hotel, we headed for all the noise!

*This is AI generated*

We attended two days of amazing displays of incredible Regalia, outstanding music and intense dance performances… f.y.i. taking pictures willy nilly is considered quite rude. If you wish to take a picture of someone, it is sort of expected to give a gift in return. I learned this early on and left my camera in my purse.

We toured the local museums, got lost driving around in the countryside and ate whatever we wanted. I will never forget that trip. I honestly can’t remember what I bought my daughter, but she picked out a necklace for me that I have kept to this day! It is a bronze cast of a wolfs face. Though the necklace bindings all gave out, I have continued to reset the cast all these years later.

While some may think I remember the Powwow as my favorite place to visit… in truth, it’s the time spent with my oldest that holds my memories fast! She and I haven’t spoken in some time. Many years have passed since we were that close. No matter how angry she is, no matter how unforgiving she tries to be… I know we will always have Kamloops, and that is enough memory to get me to the gates…

Sharing and caring,

giving and living,

and most importantly…

being loved by my God!

A Bit a Both…

Daily writing prompt
Are you more of a night or morning person?

Right now, depending on which eye is open I can either see bright beautiful colors and tones … or possibly only dim, shadowy and foggy nighttime!

This is a perfect time for this question since I won’t be able to say this by next week. Once both eyes come back online… bright and beautiful here I come..

Which Kind?

This was a very open ended question… if I don’t know which kind of meat being referred to, then how can I give an answer?

Animal, human, vegetable or fruit?

They all meat nutritional needs…

They can all be picked and prepared in a fashion…

Some taste one way, while others taste another…

Some are sweet meats, while others are either salty or bitter meats…

Any one of them will sate our hunger…

Too much of any can be unhealthy, while not enough can leave us starved of calories needed to live…

Depending on the person you ask, some are good and some are bad…

Some are legal and some are NOT, but that never stopped humans before…

So, how do I feel about meat?

I eat it… not the human kind, but all of the others! People can be the most bitter, fattening, overly sweet and unhealthy of all the available things to eat. I did come up with something we can all agree on…

When I asked the AI to generate a photo of a man with arms and legs of brocolli and a hippo shaped body

I should not have been surprised at the result!

I did laugh my tail off at the use of this human, as no more than a toothpick for my Hippodon! I made that word up!

Don’t wear em out…

Straight off the cuff, I will say that the two most favorite things I wish to wear would be my peepers… my windows to the soul… my good ole fashioned eye balls.

While they are both on the fritz at the moment, never fear… Cataract Surgeries are here!

Starting this week I will be having both my eyes fixed, as I have had severely limited vision now for about a year. It will seem strange for about a week, as I’ll have to wear my glasses with one of the lenses popped out, until the second eye gets fixed. No problemo… I can work this out, and it will all be worth it in the end.

Eyes are pretty important for a good many things folks… like driving a car, walking anywhere alone, taking pictures, reading, writing, watching movies, eating glorious foods, clearly seeing other humans faces, doing my hair, shaving my legs, tweezing my eye brows, finding anything, crocheting, painting… ok ok, I gotta stop or else we may be here a good bit.

The point should be pretty obvious by now… Eyes are very important to have and appreciate… don’t wear em out! The old adage, You never know what you’ve got til it’s gone, is pretty accurate. While I have been nowhere near blind, this has been pretty scary and miserable for this Literary Recluse. I’m also quite fortunate in having access to modern medicine, which provides a relatively simple solution to my visual dilemma.

The only thing I am disappointed about is not being able to get at least one Robotic Eye Implant… I asked, but was met with a firm No! Oh well, at least I asked.

To WHO’M are you referring to…

Asking an Overthinking Insomniac what they would do with extra hours of non sleeping may cause you bodily injury, so be careful what you ask?

I have a love/hate relationship with sleep… I love what I cannot have, and I hate the fact that I never get enough of that which I love!

The problem with this prompt question is that it doesn’t specify whether it will be just me who no longer needs sleep or everyone? There would be a big difference if we were all awake at ungodly hours of the night… misery LOVES company!

I, for one, would now have a wider audience to invite to my 3 a.m. Overthinkers Anonymous Club… bring your own cookies for these meetings.

Another thing to consider would be the lines at the gas pump, grocer or banking establishments… all for one and one for all, right?

If you haven’t thought of this yet, it would be pretty tough to do much of anything during our Night Owl Endeavors, unless we were all awake… why do you think it is so miserable when you can’t sleep? It’s dark, quiet, with everyone around you blissfully sleeping away the empty hours of the night. You cannot make noise, turn on lights, nor can you talk out loud without fear of disturbing those around you not blessed with your gift of non sleepery.

I have tried thus far not to bring up the giant bird in the room, but it can wait no longer. Think about the Owl… such an apt midnight hunter, with eyes as big and round as saucers for pinpoint accuracy in the darkness. Even if the bird wanted to be awake for 24 hours in a day, his big beautiful eyes would be his undoing, with just a bit of sunlight. This gorgeous Bird of Prey has his place in nature, and has been designed to fit there for many important reasons… remember everything in nature requires a balance.

Nature aside, man himself has been quite destructive and selfish with the hours of the day that he already has… take sleeping out of the mix and we simply perpetuate the problem… our tax dollars already pay for all the vacations and toys of our government officials while they work during the day, or rather, do little all day besides pat themselves on the back. What on earth might they get up to in the early morning hours? That thought makes me groan with apprehension. Nope… they need a strict bedtime, thank you very much!

I wish to keep what little sleep I am blessed with, as it gets me closer to home, as well as, giving my spirit some respite from life’s harsh realities…
